First settled by Europeans in the
mid 18th century, Buffalo, NY was named after the creek that flows through
it. Originally settled by the Ongiara, the land was later controled
by the Senecas who won control. The radial street and grid design of
the city was created by Joseph Ellicott, an agent of the Holland Land
Company, in 1804. A surge in population brought about by the Erie Canal
lead to the incorporation of Buffalo, NY as a city in 1832 with a population
of roughly 10,000.
